![]() ![]() Should this come as a surprise to the legal profession that the military’s valued leadership traits also play a critical role in the legal professional? It shouldn’t. So how can these leadership traits help lawyers in their profession? Is it a coincidence that Justice and Judgement, the purpose of the law and the foundation of the law, are the first two traits of the acronym? Looking further into the traits, and most senior lawyers will probably tell you, the lawyers they most preferred to work with, or even against in an adversarial setting, possessed these traits. ![]() We never knew who JJ was or why he (or she) needed to tie a buckle, but for those not familiar with the acronym, it was used to reinforce those traits that the military considers key elements of effective leadership: As a Midshipmen going through NROTC, the acronym JJ DID TIE BUCKLE permeated our daily leadership training regimen and continues to resonate with military professionals today.
